Can You Use Sex Toys in the Shower or Bath?

Waterproof IPX ratings explained, splash resistance vs submergible and safety.

What Is An IPX Rating?

If you're a fan of having a vibe sesh in the bath or shower, it's essential that you pay attention to IPX ratings. Sex toys with a motor usually have an IPX rating, letting you know how resistant a product is to water. The higher the number, the more water resistant the product is.

What Each Rating Means

Rating

What it means

What it means for your toy

IPX0

No water protection

Keep away from water.

IPX1

Protects against vertically dripping water

Minimal protection against drips.

IPX2

Protects against dripping water when tilted up to 15°

Limited protection from drips at an angle.

IPX3

Protects against water sprays

Can handle certain light water sprays under test conditions.

IPX4

Protects against splashing water from any direction

Generally suitable for wiping down or careful cleaning, subject to the manufacturer's instructions.

IPX5

Protects against water jets

Can withstand specified water jets, but isn't necessarily suitable for immersion.

IPX6

Protects against powerful water jets

More substantial protection from water jets, but not submersion.

IPX7

Protects against temporary immersion

Tested for immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes under specified conditions.

IPX8

Protects against continuous immersion under specified conditions

Suitable for immersion within the manufacturer's stated depth and time limits.

IPX Ratings & Cleaning

1. Check the toy's material

Nonporous materials like silicone, stainless steel, and borosilicate glass are generally easier to clean thoroughly than porous materials. Make sure you follow the product's specific care instructions.

2. Use an appropriate cleaner

Use a toy cleaner compatible with the product, or mild, unscented soap and water when the manufacturer permits it. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and products that could damage the material.

3. Dry it completely

Pat the toy dry with a clean, lint-free towel and allow it to air-dry fully before storing. Moisture trapped around seams or charging ports can cause problems.

4. Store it properly

Store your clean, dry toy in its own pouch or container, away from direct sunlight, excess heat, and other toys that could react with its material.

Cleaning sex toys by IPX rating

IPX rating

Water protection

Recommended cleaning approach

IPX0

No water protection

Clean with a damp cloth and appropriate toy cleaner. Avoid getting moisture into seams, buttons, charging ports, or the motor housing.

IPX1–IPX2

Limited protection against dripping water

Use a lightly dampened cloth. Avoid rinsing or soaking the toy.

IPX3

Protection against water sprays under test conditions

Wipe with a damp cloth. Don't assume it is safe to rinse under a tap.

IPX4

Protection against splashing water

A damp cloth is a safe default. Only rinse if the manufacturer specifically permits it.

IPX5–IPX6

Protection against water jets

These ratings don't guarantee that a toy can be safely rinsed or submerged. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.

IPX7–IPX8

Protection against immersion under specified conditions

If the manufacturer confirms the toy is washable, rinse or wash it as directed. Don't exceed the specified depth or immersion time.

Things To Remember:

  • Water-resistant doesn't always mean waterproof. Marketing terms aren't a substitute for the product's tested rating.

  • IPX7 doesn't automatically include IPX5 or IPX6 protection. Immersion and water-jet tests are different.

  • Charging ports matter! Make sure the toy is fully charged only when dry and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.

  • Cleaning instructions still apply. Even a highly water-resistant toy may have material-specific cleaning requirements.
