Get up close and personal with the people of Stag Shop in this new tell-all series!
1. What made you want to work for a sex toy company?
-
“I loved the idea of being able to help people learn how to talk about their bodies and their pleasure, and it remains my favourite thing about this job.”
-
“I thought it would be a really fun place to work, where I could also help and educate people with what can be a very embarrassing topic for some.”
- “I have always been a sex positive person and I was looking for a job that matched my values as a person and a company that is inclusive and I found it here with Stag Shop!”
2. What is one thing you wished the general public knew about our industry or company?
-
“We are a sex positive space that has a focus on education and customer service! We won't be embarrassed to answer any of your questions and you should feel comfortable asking knowing that you will get the information you are looking for and our sexperts will help you find the product that will help you.”
-
“We are not just retail employees...we are; confidence boosters, marriage savers, sex educators, medical device suppliers & more!”
- “I wish the general public knew that there is something for everyone in our stores. Whether they are brand new to experimenting or an established veteran in their own right; we have something for you.”
3. What are some of the challenges (either in general or to you personally) to working within the sex toy industry?
-
“It can sometimes be challenging to navigate the line between appropriate and inappropriate with certain customers. Given the nature of what we sell, it is absolutely appropriate (and very helpful!) to tell us intimate details about their sex lives when it relates to the sale, and our customers should never feel weird about disclosing that information if they're comfortable. However, there is a line that sometimes gets crossed where the level of detail we get is no longer appropriate, and setting that boundary can be a really difficult thing to navigate without making our customers feel bad for sharing.”
-
“One of the challenges that I've had many times is that people assume that since I work in a store like this, it's ok to proposition me, make lewd and derogatory comments or they assume I'm for hire for "dates "."
- “Some challenges in the industry personally being a non-binary Masc presenting individual, would be the fact that most of our clientele are female and make a general assumption about me before they get to talk to me. But that is just a small hurdle as when I communicate about the items in our store so clearly and confidently, they generally warm up to the idea of actually talking to me."
4. What’s the WEIRDEST thing someone has said or done after you told them you work at the Stag Shop?
-
“Dating apps are already a nightmare on a good day, but especially when you have "Stag Shop" listed as your job lol. People often take it as an opportunity to get way too personal way too quick!”
-
“They stopped talking to me, permanently!” 😔
- “My mom told me she is going to tell people I am unemployed rather than tell them where I work. Which again highlights that we have a lot of work to do regarding the stigma around talking about our sex lives.”
5. If you weren’t in this industry or working for Stag Shop, what do you think you would be doing or where do you see yourself working instead?
-
“If I wasn't here, I would love to do something like event planning for somewhere like Oasis (a Toronto-based sex club), or put my photography degree to use and do event photography for fetish clubs etc.” 📸
-
“If I wasn't working in this industry, I wanted to be in the addictions and mental health or doing something in organizing or home/store design.” 🏠
-
“ I would be working in the cosmetic industry!” 💄
- “If I wasn't working for Stag or this industry.....I honestly have no idea what I'd be doing. Whatever it is, I wouldn't be as happy as I am now, Stag is my happy place away from home” 🙂
