Known as a popular health and wellness tool within the industry, vaginal dilators are a unique device for vagina havers. Used for a wide variety of different reasons, vaginal dilators often come doctor recommended and requested by many of our customers.
What is a Dilator?
Dr. Laura Berman Isabelle Dilator Set Purple
A dilator is a smooth and tapered toy designed to comfortably penetrate the vagina and gradually stretch the vaginal tissue over time. Many dilators come in a graduated set of differing lengths and widths, offering the user a chance to start small and work up to a bigger size and ultimately accommodate more penetration.
The main goal of using a dilator is to increase comfort with vaginal penetration by reducing the pain as well as increasing and maintaining the elasticity of the vaginal opening.
Some dilators/sets offer a vibrating option which can help to relax the vaginal muscles as well as provide more pleasure to a somewhat seemingly clinical experience.

Do I need a Dilator?
As mentioned before, doctors will recommend a dilator set to their patients for a multitude of medical (mental and/or physical) conditions that are causing Vaginismus; an involuntary tightness of the vagina during attempted penetration. This results in the person experiencing pain in the vagina, with it often being too painful to insert something like a tampon, let alone accommodate penetration with a penis or sex toy.
Some common medical reasons are:
- Cancer patients
- Those who underwent any sort of vaginal reconstructive surgery (trans folks included)
- Trauma recovery
- Those with Vaginal Atrophy (thinning of the vaginal walls)
- Those with Vaginal Agenesis (born without a developed vagina)
- Mental Health matters like anxiety, etc.
